Motion-Activated Bike-Wheel LEDs Light up as Graphics

A Northern California company is taking bike lights to a new level by developing LEDs that light up wheels with custom images and animations.

MonkeyLectric's Monkey Light Pro system for bicycle wheels creates a LED light show when the bike is moving. Monkey Light Pro is a set of four rows of LED light strips, which are waterproof for riding in the elements. Using companion web-based software, you can program images and animations that can be sent to the light system via Bluetooth.

When travelling at speeds of 10 to 40 MPH, the Monkey Light Pro LEDs light up when installed on your bicycle's existing wheels. Because of a phenomenon known as the "persistence of vision," humans see and process those flashing lights into a recognizable image. It's quite a sight to see in action; check it out in the video, above.

MonkeyLectric is trying to raise $180,000 on Kickstarter to further develop this product. With 55 days left in its campaign, backers had already pledged more than $84,500 as of Sunday afternoon. A limited number of backers can get Monkey Light Pro for an early-bird price of $695.

The lights do come with a preloaded set of animations to get you started, but you can add your own creations through a USB connection. The lights also recharge via USB.

This is a creative way for cyclists to make their ride unique. And as for companies and advertisers, this could be a new way to spread brand awareness.

While bike lights generally add visibility for safety on the road, a potential hitch with these lights could be if fellow cyclists and drivers get distracted by the eye-catching animations.

What do you think about these unique bike-wheel LEDs: cool or too much? Let us know in the comments.

Giro Indicator Sport Bike Helmet Review

Check out on Amazon: Giro Indicator Helmet (Matte Black/Yellow Livestrong)

Product Features:
  • Lightweight bike helmet that's ideal for casual or technical use
  • In-mold construction fuses outer shell with impact-absorbing EPS liner
  • 20 built-in vents thrust cool air over and around rider's head
  • Includes snap-fit visor; Acu Dial fit system for easy 1-hand adjustment
  • Adjusts between 21.25 and 24 inches; weighs 0.62 pounds
Review:

For a helmet at this price, it's amazing what the Indicator has to offer in terms of looks, style and function. It certainly looks like it should cost a whole lot more and, fortunately, it's not all looks and no trousers - it also offers great protection and airflow through 20 vents.

The fit is good, using Giro's Acu Dial twist wheel to adjust it to your head. While this is easy enough to use, factory fresh helmets can be a little sticky to adjust. With this lid, one size fits all in the 54-61cm range so there's little worry about buying the wrong size. It comes with a snap-fit visor that can be removed if you prefer the racer look. With the Indicator tipping the scales at 276g it's a winner al round, feeling light and comfortable to wear.

Schwinn 20-Function Bike Computer review:
This bike computer is only $15.61. 17-functions include the odometer, distance meter, trip meter, time, calories, maximum speed, temperature etc. These functions are very useful. It’s  my best assistant  while riding. Some people said that you can not reset things such as distance, calories and so on. But I think all the items are easy to reset. This bike computer has two buttons. The right button allow you to scroll through functions. Then hold the left button for two seconds, you can reset the function to zero.
In a word, this Schwinn 20-Function Bike Computer is great. I highly recommend this great product.
